Make your pet a hero
by donating blood

A stack of treats for our furry heroes

  • A $100 Petbarn voucher or 6-pk of Nexgard Spectra (varies per location)
  • A FREE full physical exam with each donation
  • A FREE blood test with each donation

Make an impact on animal lives

You may not have ever thought about it, but just like humans, some sick pets need blood transfusions, too. Some accidents and illnesses cause such catastrophic blood loss that we need to supplement the patient's blood with a donation of blood from another animal. Just 1 pet blood donation can save the lives of up to 3 critically ill animals.

The pet blood donation process

Once your pet is admitted, our qualified team will perform a full physical exam, along with a blood test, to ensure they are fit and healthy. Our team will then prepare your pet for donation, which involves clipping a small area from the donation site and often a light sedation to help make the experience as stress-free as possible.

We collect one unit of blood from your dog, which is approximately 450mL. After collection, we’ll give your blood donor hero IV fluids, a snack, and, of course, plenty of cuddles. We monitor your pet for a couple of hours then they’ll be ready to go home!

Canine Donor Criteria

  • Be between 2 and 7 years of age
  • Weigh greater than 25kg
  • Be in good health
  • Be fully vaccinated (with a C3, C5 or C7 vaccine)
  • On constant Heartworm prevention
  • Not previously had a blood transfusion

If you have a dog that fits the above criteria and would like to register them to be included in the donor program, please reach out to one of our paticipating clinics below via call or email, and we will be in contact to learn more about your furry hero.

Feline Donor Criteria

  • Be of a larger build and weigh over 4kg
  • Be between 1-5 years old
  • Be up to date with vaccinations & prevention medications
  • Be in good health and have no serious illnesses or long-term medication
  • Has never received a blood transfusion previously

If you have a cat that fits the above criteria and would like to register them to be included in the donor program, please reach out to one of our paticipating clinics below via call or email, and we will be in contact to learn more about your furry hero.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scheduling the time for a donation is as easy as calling one of our participating AEC clinics and scheduling an appointment. Your pet will typically be admitted to our hospital in the morning, and discharged in the afternoon.

Providing your pet has passed their physical and blood test, donating should be very safe. The unit of blood that we collect from your pet will be rapidly replaced by the bone marrow over the next few days. We reccomend that your pet rest and avoid strenuous excercise for a few days after donating. The most common risk with blood donation is slight bruising or mild irritation at the site of collection. These issues will typically resolve on their own after a few days. If sedation or anaesthetia is required, these procedures do carry some inherent risk, though the risk is minised by our high standards of patient care.

Your pet will be one of our VIP clients and we will do our utmost to ensure that the experience is a pleasant one full of cuddles and even a few snacks!

It is reasonable and safe for a pet to donate 1 unit of blood every 3 months. However, we will only ask that your pet come in once every six months. You may withdraw your pet from the program at any time or decline a donation if it is not covenient for you to bring your pet in at that time
