Pathology for animals

Pathology for animals

Pathology in veterinary medicine is a field that involves diagnosing diseases through the examination of tissues, organs and bodily fluids. The AREN Network is home to experienced veterinary pathologists who use diagnostic services to help your pet get the treatment and ongoing support they need to thrive.

We take pride in our specialty services

Veterinary pathology is the study of animal diseases, including their causes, development and how they affect the body. In contrast to general vets, veterinary pathologists are specialists who work closely with other vets to diagnose diseases. They do this by analysing samples of blood, tissues and a range of bodily fluids. As specialists, they are instrumental in detecting infections, cancers and other conditions that might not be immediately visible through physical exams or imaging.

At AREN, our veterinary pathologists have access to advanced lab equipment and techniques to provide an accurate and timely diagnosis. Whether your pet has a chronic illness, unresolved symptoms or abnormal diagnostic results, our team is here to help.

There are many situations where a pet may need the expertise of a veterinary pathologist. Some common conditions and issues include:

  • Chronic or persistent illnesses: Pets with long-standing or recurring illnesses that have not responded to standard treatments can benefit from additional diagnostic testing to identify the underlying cause.
  • Abnormal diagnostic results: If routine blood tests, x-rays or other diagnostic tests show abnormal results, further analysis by a pathologist can help confirm the diagnosis.
  • Unresolved or unusual symptoms: Pets that exhibit symptoms that don’t fit a clear diagnosis can benefit from the specialised testing of a veterinary pathologist, whether that involves a biopsy or advanced bloodwork.
  • Tumours or masses: Pathologists can help diagnose cancers and determine the type and stage of tumours. With the right information, vets can then develop the most appropriate treatment plan.

The AREN Network’s team of veterinary pathologists are on hand with advanced diagnostic services so you can better understand your pet’s health. Some of our services include:

  • Histopathology: This is the microscopic examination of tissues to detect abnormalities such as tumours, infections, inflammatory diseases and more. Animal histopathology is what is used to diagnose cancers and other serious conditions.
  • Veterinary clinical pathology: This branch of pathology analyses blood, urine and other bodily fluids to understand organ function, detect infections and diagnose certain diseases.
  • Cytology: In cytology, cells from fluids, tissues or body cavities are examined to help identify diseases like cancers and immune disorders.
  • Microbiology: Microbiology testing is used to uncover bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Veterinarians can then choose the most appropriate treatment for the specific infection.

When your pet needs a vet pathology appointment, you’ll normally go through the following steps:

  1. Your regular vet will collect samples such as blood, tissue or fluids from your pet for analysis.
  2. The samples are then sent to an animal pathology lab, where they are analysed using various techniques such as histopathology or cytology.
  3. Your veterinary pathologist will then examine the samples and write up a detailed report of their findings, including a diagnosis if possible.
  4. Based on the pathologist’s report, your regular vet will develop a treatment plan to tackle your pet’s condition.

Working with the veterinary pathology team at AREN will give your pet the best chance to overcome their ailment and ensure any underlying conditions are accurately diagnosed. If you have concerns about your pet’s health, you can reach out to AREN for more information or to schedule a vet pathology appointment.
