You don’t need a referral or appointment to attend our site in an emergency.

At AAERC, we believe life is better with a pet. Located at 119 Anzac Highway, Kurralta Park, AAERC offers 24/7 emergency care, surgery services and diagnostic imaging.

At AAERC, we understand how stressful emergencies can be, which is why our team will provide a comprehensive assessment of your pet’s condition and clear instructions on what your pet needs, providing a tailored plan that suits your situation. We will work with you and your regular vet to find the best treatment option for your pet.

Our site has access to on-site pathology and the latest diagnostic equipment, including CT (SAs only), cone beam CT, fluoroscopy, endoscopy, and ultrasonography facilities. We also have mechanical ventilator support for critical care patients.

For vets: referrals

You are most welcome to call AAERC on 08 8371 0333 any time between 8 am and 6 pm Monday to Friday to discuss your patient’s case with us. Our reception team will be able to advise you of appointment availability and possible treatment estimates. Please email your patient’s history, lab results, and any associated imaging, clinical histories, radiographs, and pathology results via direct email at clinical@aaerc.com.au. We ask that your client give us a call at their convenience to make an appointment with your chosen Referral Veterinarian.

Dr Andrew Carter

Veterinary Dermatology

BVSc (Hons), Diploma in Veterinary Dermatology

Andrew graduated with honours from the University of Melbourne in 1987. Upon graduating he worked as a small animal veterinarian in Adelaide before travelling to the United Kingdom.

While practising in Essex and London he completed his Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Veterinary Dermatology. He then commenced dermatology training at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies of the University of Edinburgh, completing his training in September 2001. In July 2003, he was awarded a Diploma in Veterinary Dermatology by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

In 2011, Andrew established VetDermSA, a referral dermatology service based at the AVSARC.

Andrew has been an invited speaker at continuing education events for veterinarians throughout Australia and continues to support the South Australian Veterinary Dermatology Discussion group which aims at improving the quality of veterinary dermatology in South Australia.

Dr Bruce Meyers

MMED Vet (Small Animal Surgery)

Dr Bruce Meyers qualified as a veterinarian in 1993 and completed his Master’s Degree in Small Animal Surgery in 2008 at the University of Pretoria (Onderstepoort). He is registered as a Specialist Veterinary Surgeon with the South African Veterinary Council. Immediately after specialising, Bruce started St Helier Veterinary Hospital and Specialist Centre, and designed and project managed the establishment of a state-of-the-art Veterinary Hospital.

The core business of St Helier has been the provision of surgical referrals throughout the Province of KwaZulu-Natal and beyond. Over the time Bruce was there he established and maintained an incredible reputation with both the Veterinarians in the area and the Public at large. From a surgical perspective Bruce’s interests lie particularly in the fields of orthopaedics, neurosurgery, soft tissue surgery and reconstructive surgery.

From a personal perspective, Bruce is a keen mountain biker, loves kite surfing, the ocean and spending time with his family. Bruce relocated to Adelaide in January 2022 with his wife, Julie, daughter Abigail and their three dachshunds Gemma, Bo and Katie and is very excited to be joining the AVSARC team every Monday through to Thursday.

Dr Jacqui Ley

Veterinary Psychiatrists (Behaviour Specialist)

BVSc (Hons), FANZCVS (Veterinary Behaviour), PhD DECAWBM

Dr Jacqui Ley was the inaugural Hills TM Resident in Veterinary Behavioural Medicine.  She graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1995 and worked in companion animal practice in metropolitan Melbourne.  While studying, she recognised veterinary behavioural medicine as an area that brought together her interests in animal behaviour, animal training and the functioning brain.  She obtained her membership to the Veterinary Behaviour Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) in 2000.  Dr Ley completed her PhD, through Monash University, describing a model and building a questionnaire for assessing canine personality.  She has also described the factors that affect the relationships between an owner and their dog.  Other research interests include the human-animal bond and factors affecting this, tests for measuring fear and other behaviours in dogs and the social relationships in dogs and cats.  She was a tutor for the Graduate Certificate in Animal Welfare at Monash University.

In 2011 she became a diplomat of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine – one of two people to hold this qualification in Australia.  Jacqui was awarded a Fellowship to the ANZCVS in the Chapter of Veterinary Behaviour at Science Week 2013.  She sees behaviour cases on a regular basis at MVSC.

Dermatology Nurse Team Leader

After a rewarding career in Hospitality for 18 years, Rachel made the life changing decision in 2016 to start studying to become a qualified Veterinary nurse. Aspiring to provide pets, people and all animals with the best care, has always been a passion. Rachel completed a double Certificate III in Animal Studies and Certificate IV in Veterinary nursing in 2019.

Rachel is now the Dermatology Nursing Team Leader and has worked alongside Dr Andrew Carter, and Dermatology Nurse Assistant, Angelique in the Dermatology department at AVSARC for the past two years. Rachel has also previously worked in general practice nursing, specialty surgical nursing and emergency nursing departments for a previous four years before accepting the Dermatology Nursing roles. Rachel’s professional interests include everything Dermatology, five star patient and client care, animal behaviour, cooperative care, anaesthesia, surgical nursing and ongoing learning and development.

Rachel is know by many as the crazy SharPei lady. She currently has Boston, her 7 yr old male and somewhat “difficult” Sharpei and Betty her 2 yr old female “nice but scared” Sharpei. They both happen to be patients under the brilliant care of Dr Andrew. When Rachel is not doting over the fur - Pei’s, she will have them in the garden “helping”. The Sharpei’s also enjoy walks, (Betty loves helping with the washing) and visiting the beach shack with the extended family including Daisy the 11yr old golden Labrador.
